Why understanding your blood sugar level is important for your health?

What is glucose?

Glucose is a sugar that you get from food or can be made in the body.

It’s the major source of energy that your body’s cells need, particularly your brain as it’s the only food that it uses.

The glucose travels in the body through the bloodstream, this is why we call it blood glucose. Some hormones are involved in glucose use, it’s insulin.

It balances the glucose in the body and stores it for later use in the liver and muscles.

We call it hyperglycaemia when you have too much sugar in your blood and hypoglycaemia when the blood sugar level is low.

Common symptoms of high blood sugars

Usually, when we talk about the blood sugar level, we think of obesity or diabetes, but having a high blood sugar level in our body can also be linked to symptoms and diseases such as:

  • Headaches

  • Frequent urination

  • High thirst

  • Acne

  • PCOS

  • Diabetes

  • Irritability

  • Fatigue

  • Anxiety

  • Mood swing

  • Putting on weight

  • Craving

  • PMS

How can you test it?

You can check your blood sugar level via a blood test in the morning on an empty stomach to get optimal results as you haven't eaten yet or do anything that might higher or lower your blood sugar level

But to get optimal results and see how the food or your stress can impact your blood sugar level, you should be monitoring it throughout the day. How could do you monitor your blood sugar level?

The FreeStyle Libre 2 system automatically tracks your glucose levels day and night using a small sensor worn on the back of the upper arm and an app or reader that lets you view your glucose levels at any time.

I do recommend it as I have seen greater improvements from my clients when using this.

Case study

Marie, 30 years old. Acne, fatigue , PMS and weight gain

When I met Marie, she told me that she was exhausted all the time, irritable and in a constant bad mood.

She felt that something wasn't normal in her body as she was tired all the time and felt that she had to eat more to get the energy she needed, and she started to gain weight.

She went to her GP. They made some tests on her thyroid and glucose level but the results came back normal. They said that it might come from her hormones, so she saw her gynaecologist who said that she needed to take the pills to help her with her symptoms. 6 months after using the pills, Marie still felt tired. Her headaches were reduced, but she still needed to eat more to feel energized.

Marie’s symptoms when she contacted me:

  • Headaches

  • Fatigue

  • Low energy

  • Weight gain

  • PMS

  • Acne

  • Muscle pain

  • Lack of motivation

  • Cravings for sweets all the time

Marie's goals were to:

  • Feel more energized

  • Stop having these cravings

  • Have a better skin

  • Lose weight

  • Be healthier

She wanted to have a normal life without having to think about her weight or her fatigue. She wanted to have enough energy to keep up all day and have a social life like she used to have.

She was ready to change all her old habits to adopt new ones that will help her to get the life she used to have.

Marie took the 6 weeks package, which gives us enough time to implement new habits around a balanced diet and lifestyle.

My approach

  1. We defined what was missing in Marie's diet and we found a balanced diet that was personalised and suitable for her. She didn’t like cooking so we found a way for her to cook quick and delicious meals, packed up with all the nutrients that she needed.

  2. We adjusted the right diet for her to address nutrient deficiency and fibre intake.

  3. We worked on balancing her blood sugar level. She used the monitoring device to see how her body works. By understanding that, everything changed for Marie, as she was now able to see how food was impacting her fatigue and mood.

  4. We implemented some lifestyle changes to support detoxification and help manage her stress.

At the end of the protocol, Marie said:

  • She felt more energized during the day

  • She said that her sleep was getting better and felt good when waking up. She wasn't tired at all during the day.

  • She was able to socialize again

  • Her skin got clearer

  • No more headaches

  • She lost the weight that she wanted, as she was able to go back to the gym and walked more

  • She cooked herself some easy and delicious meals. She even decided to take some cooking classes.

  • No more food cravings! She was relieved as she didn’t need to rely on her coffee or sweets to get energised
